The decision to withhold this funding is directly contrary to President Trump’s goal of returning K-12 education to the states. This funding goes directly to states and local school districts, where local leaders decide how this funding is spent, because as we know, local communities know how to best serve students and families. Withholding this funding denies states and communities the opportunity to pursue localized initiatives to support students and their families.

Today House Bill 57, which contains a $700 BSA increase and reasonable education policy measures overwhelmingly passed the Alaska Legislature.

I am grateful to the 48 elected leaders who put partisan politics aside to take the first step in what must be a multi-year process to adequately support our public school students, families and educators. While the additional funding is well below what school districts need after years of inaction and unchecked inflation - progress was made today.

This weekend I joined my colleague Margo Bellamy at the Association of Alaska School Boards Spring Board Member Academy. I truly appreciated the deep-dive on Alaska’s Tribal Consultation process, and used the opportunity to create action items aimed at meaningfully integrating aspects of the process within district operations.

Today at a special meeting the Anchorage Assembly overwhelmingly approved AO 2025-29(S): ASD’s 2025-2026 operating budget. The (S) version added new language which pre-approves utilization of additional state revenue, such as the $1,000 BSA increase contained in HB69, once the bill becomes law.

I greatly appreciate the collaboration, support and advocacy of our Assembly colleagues. Today’s action will help ASD quickly allocate new financial resources to retain valued educators and reverse cuts to beloved programs as soon as they are made available by the Alaska Legislature.
