On this day in 2014, a Russian Buk shot down a passenger aircraft MH17 flying at 10 km from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur over Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine.

All 283 passengers and 15 crew were killed.

On July 17, 2014, Russian-backed forces shot down a Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 operating Flight MH17 from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur.

The aircraft crashed in the Donetsk region, which was occupied by Russia. All 298 people on board were killed.

The Dutch-led Joint Investigation Team established that the plane was brought down by a Buk missile system belonging to the 53rd Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade of the Russian Armed Forces, based in Kursk.

For 12 years, Russia has continued to deny responsibility. The three men convicted by a Dutch court remain in Russia, which has refused to extradite them to serve their sentences.

Ukraine extends its deepest condolences to the families of the victims. Time cannot diminish the pain of this loss.
