interesting story happening in Boland rugby around broadcast rights 📺🏉
for years independent people in the community live stream club games on youtube . for own gain of course, but also a valuable service to communities who often got limited access to sport broadcasts
in 2023 Boland Rugby (commercial arm) purchase broadcast rights from the Union. this is funding that the Union desperately need, and it depend on being able to sell exclusive broadcast rights. fair enough
So then lawyer letters. stop doing it. remove all content. etc
but the youtubers had spend years building the audience of Boland grassroots rugby. so there was strong pushback. even Schalk Snr got involved on the side of the youtubers.
so to their credit Boland Ltd then made licensing agreements with the streamers. they can continue recording matches . Boland Rugby will help improve production quality. and the youtubers can invoice Boland Rugby for their work.
it is unclear if they can broadcast on own channels and get ad revenue and such, or if the only income is allowed to be from the agreement with Boland Ltd, but it is a interesting compromise.
we not naive - commercial rights is the lifeblood of any sport. but public access is equally important factor. This story probably is not over , but good to see people trying to navigate it and find solutions together.
