@ratgirldingus Her acting is solid overall, but I’ve never understood people holding this particular delivery up as a great example of it. It just comes across rather stilted.
There’re an unfortunate number of people in the film space who genuinely believe that their opinion is gospel. A dude at a junket once asked me what Cameron’s masterpiece was, I thought about it and said “T2.” He recoiled & said “Titanic,” like I’d gotten a trivia question wrong.
@No5mallf3at I don’t really think slop is a helpful term if it’s going to mean “anything that was popular with a mass audience at its time.” Slop is supposed to describe something low-effort, braindead, shallow, easy to reproduce ad naseum without thought or intention.
@go_lions33@woop54 Ah right fair enough. I’m in the UK so haven’t seen it from that side of things. Over here the advertising seems to be very lax, even in cinemas where you think they’d want to push it.
a common genre of tweet on here is "why are people attacking me just for not liking a movie? all i said was that the only people who could possibly like it are illiterate mouth-breathing brain-damaged morons!"
This isn’t specific to OBAA/Sinners but I feel like so many approach art with expectations, a checklist, and don’t accepts these works as a personal statement and entertainment. This doesn’t put them above criticism, but so many flat out refuse to engage with what they are
@MrMacFunn@chi_yin_ji@alpacnologia@shivlestat@poz_roz3517 Did you see my previous post to the one you’re replying to? I don’t believe John Davidson is being racist, I believe his condition causes him to say that slur without actually meaning it.
BAFTA needs to issue a proper apology to Delroy, Michael, John, and viewers for how abysmally they handled this.
Producers had 2 hours to edit that moment and chose not to knowing how it would be received, making it an intentional choice to cause hurt and embarrassment.
It’s unfortunate folks are twisting her words as ableism. She not once spoke ill of John Davidson & even acknowledged what an impossible situation this is. She critiqued Alan Cumming/BAFTAs “apology” saying “IF you were offended" which implies the slur isn’t inherently offensive.
this is a perfectly reasonable and even-handed response to the situation.
and if you don’t think so, you simply don’t like or care about Black people. and I don’t want to hear from you anymore. own that part of yourself and stay away from me.
@chi_yin_ji@alpacnologia@shivlestat@poz_roz3517 I’m sure it is possible to have Tourette’s and also be racist, but I don’t think anyone commenting on this situation actually knows what John Davidson is thinking or if he holds those views.
The website I linked above explains that a bit better.
@chi_yin_ji@alpacnologia@shivlestat@poz_roz3517 For sake of clarity it doesn’t make what happened any less horrific. BAFTA’s response to it just wasn’t good enough and they severely underplayed the situation. The lack of care towards Jordan and Lindo is just unacceptable from them.
@chi_yin_ji@alpacnologia@shivlestat@poz_roz3517 Part of the condition is that he can’t make choices with regards to what he blurts out when he tics. For lack of a better term his brain is wired wrong, so it’s not going through the same processes that a regular person does.

@_joeb0501 Absolutely terrorised that Swindon defence on his final game. Was such a breath of fresh air considering how awful we were going forward that season, was amazing to see a player actually run at defenders.
@strangeharbors My whole timeline the last day has been various people talking about how almost every film nominated was one of the worst releases last year. Just exhausting to read through tbh.
