People in the US and all over the world are fed up with bogus asylum claims. Asylum isn’t supposed to be a loophole to circumvent immigration laws; rather, it’s supposed to provide a narrow safe harbor for persons persecuted because of their “race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion.” 8 U.S.C. §1101(a)(42). But the system has long been swamped by frivolous asylum claims, meaning that it takes years to adjudicate whether applicants are actually entitled to asylum—during which time they can typically work, have children, and otherwise put down roots in our country.
A recent case highlights such abuse. Humberto “Beto” Coral (@betocoralg) came to the US from Colombia on a tourist visa in December 2015. A few months later, shortly before his lawful stay was set to expire, he applied for asylum. Coral himself has publicly claimed that he applied for asylum as a victim of “war and impunity” in Colombia (although one may wonder what that has to do with official persecution on account of his “race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion”). Be that as it may, in the waning days of the Obama Administration he received a work permit, which he continued to renew for a DECADE. During that time, he championed Colombia’s far-left then-President @petrogustavo, ran unsuccessfully for a seat in Colombia’s Congress on a pro-government platform, made defamatory comments about a former Colombian President that he was forced to retract, and tried to wage lawfare in our system against then-candidate for President (now President) @ABDELAESPRIELLA. Meanwhile, he denounced the alleged “persecution” of Hispanics in the US; whether US citizens, lawful residents, asylum seekers, or illegal aliens, he claimed, all are being “hunted and enclosed in concentration camps,” and “tortured and assassinated by the government of the United States.” Talk about an Alice-in-Wonderland scenario: while seeking asylum IN our country FROM Colombia, he was accusing our government of putting people in concentration camps and shilling for Colombia's far-left government. Not surprisingly, @SecRubio determined that he should be deported back to Colombia, where he was given a hero's greeting on the tarmac by the then-Foreign Minister and met with the then-President. True to form, he now alleges that he was “tortured” while detained as a “political prisoner” in the US--and, for good measure, challenges the legitimacy of the recent Colombian election where the pro-government party lost, calling failed candidate @IvanCepedaCast “my legitimate President.” If this isn't a perfect example of the dysfunction and abuse of our asylum system, I don't know what is.
Thank you very much. I hope there will also be an investigation into who was financing or supporting Coral in the U.S., such as @DCoronell, @GustavoBolivar, @IvanCepedaCast and @Margaritarosadf .
Coronell, Margarita, and Bolívar live and run businesses in the U.S., while supporting communism in Colombia. And they always supported Gustavo Petro and Iván Cepeda as the new president. If they support communism, they shouldn't live in the U.S., a country that doesn't support communism and is capitalist. Thank you🇨🇴🙏🏼
@DeputySecState Estimado @DeputySecState, también hay que recordar que al deportado le parecían unos cerdos guerristas los Estado Unidenses.
Hicieron lo mejor, felicidades. 👏🏻
