It's here! Our 9yr study on the notorious Falls of Lora (Loch Etive) documents #seabed#morphology changes in response to tidally governed #hydrodynamics ... we report how #rainfall modifies tidal flows in a Scottish #fjord and affects #sediment transport! https://t.co/tMbWg4P7DN
In this study we combine numerical flow modeling with novel signal processing to understand sediment fluxes observed in time series bathymetry. Correlating fjordic water level dynamics to catchment-integrated precipitation, we assessed rainfall's influence on sediment transport.

I try not to post anything political here, but some recent palace-related headlines hit me - more so than usual. I then heard this piece from @rizwanahmed on a similar vein... Take a listen. Wow.

Thank you @MarineTechno for the discussion on some of our seabed studies from @ThinkUHI@SAMSoceannews@SUPERDTP1 & @TeledyneMarine looking at extreme tidal sites around the west coast of Scotland!

My #fluids class moved onto waves this week. So I thought I’d show them how water moves under waves to help them bridge the gap between the textbook and real life… here I tracked the centroids of the ping pong balls using openCV for python
@BaskingSharkSco These are fascinating observations, thank you! The flow data is unfortunately part of another project so I'm unable to share that. However observations of stratified flow effect appears strongest LW slack offshore of Saulmore point, extending to within ~100m west of the sill.
Following Friday's tweet on the Falls of Lora, here are some fun #model simulations exploring the #fluidmechanics. Notice how rainfall (lower figure) affects timing of the tide. This mapped onto #seabed change data and likely occurs at other mid-high latitude fjords.
@BaskingSharkSco Exactly! And although the dynamics you have experienced are not well resolved in this model, ROV/ADCP work has certainly experienced that stratified flow... Suppose for diving, if it's been raining a lot, do you already anticipate an earlier slack?
The end of the PhD is looming! I'm going to miss studying these incredible local areas and their astounding #fluidmechanics/#seabed dynamics. Here is the #bathymetry beneath the tidally driven Falls of Lora, Loch Etive, western Scotland. That's a lot of scoured seabed!
This video captured by Tristan Heth on the island of Tenerife, shows how stable air flows over a mountain range or simple convection can form waves in the clouds that resemble an ocean

Fungal spore release is not passive. The temperature surrounding gilled mushrooms is changed by rapid evaporation which cools the air, creating air currents. Spores are then released getting enough uplift by a convection effect to reach a real breeze
Our recent paper on #plasticpollution is now available! In the paper we investigate the spatial variability and distribution of beached plastic litter on the west coast of Scotland using a particle tracking model:

@BaskingSharkSco@Delft3D Thanks for the question! In short - no... The initial one is common when two water bodies of differing characteristics meet (e.g. flow speed). The subsequent ones driven by eddy line dynamics... a mystery at least to me. Perhaps someone will shed light on this!
#Corryvreckan never ceasing to amaze! Take a look at this @Delft3D model of vertical #flow and shear instabilities at the Gulf of Corryvreckan, western Scotland during the infamous Great Race... home of the world's third largest whirlpool! #fluiddynamics
