If they'd said from the start that he did break the rules but he did so out of concern for his family, he's sorry and hopes it doesn't mean he loses his job.... I'd be sympathetic. It's the arrogance of the whole episode and the supine Cabinet that is so unbearable.
'We can't have a rule that applies to everyone but the government elite.'
@PeterBoneUK says if Dominic Cummings acknowledged he made a "bad mistake" and apologised he could have "carried on", but denying the breach "doesn't stand up to scrutiny."

Legality is one thing but responsibly and integrity both require a grip on reality and empathy. Every family who has stayed apart these past weeks can say that such grip is missing right at the heart of this government.
Biggest concern at start of lockdown was how we cope with young kids during isolation. Common sense was “ask neighbour/ volunteer” not drive and spread disease.Have some empathy @cabinetofficeuk The country is fuming more at the defence than the crime @michaelgove@MattHancock
How dare you #Gove across our country millions of decent wonderful people have abided by the rules precisely because they do care for their parents, their children, their grandchildren, our #NHS workers & all those who need shielding even though it broke their hearts.
People have missed funerals of loved ones because of lockdown. Many have had to look after their own young children while ill. One of the architects of the rules keeping those people housebound drove across the UK, knowing he had the virus. Indefensible hypocrisy and selfishness.
@RishiSunak@RishiSunak With respect, we have all had to manage childcare and tackle the virus over the last few weeks alone. We understood the rules meant we could not drive to family for childcare. Given all your closeness to the detail, we expected you all to be best in class by example
There are a limited number of things you can now do in England that you could not do before.
