Though Orban is gone, Putin can still count on some like-minded individuals in Central and Eastern Europe. However, they will seek to avoid open confrontation with EU institutions over Ukraine and their ties with Moscow, argues @DimitarBechev: https://t.co/GjpWcvtpwe

In your podcast of the week @JonKBateman and I dig into what's behind Russia's surprising recent internet shutdown — which did more than disrupt daily life: it also crippled the regime's own communications and propaganda. One of a series of strange events — from a diminished Victory Day parade to crackdowns on businesspeople and celebrities — that suggest growing disorder and confusion within the Russian state. And what it all signals about where Russia is heading

In Russia, the costs of air defense are being spread across the balance sheets of companies and regional governments, and have become an unregistered tax on revenue for businesses, argues @amenka. https://t.co/GM2sTwbBxh
#Putin is arriving in #China with a missile salute: large-scale exercises of Russia’s nuclear triad.
With Russia economically dependent on China and its position in the war in Ukraine looking weaker than a year ago, Putin appears to be using the drills to remind Beijing that Russia is still a great power — and to reduce the obvious asymmetry in his meeting with Xi.
❗️Russia’s Armed Forces are conducting exercises from May 19–21 on the preparation and use of nuclear forces under conditions of a potential aggression threat, the Defense Ministry said. Key points:
🔹 The purpose of the exercises is to rehearse deterrence measures and test the readiness of participating forces.
🔹 More than 64,000 troops and over 7,800 pieces of military equipment will take part.
🔹 Russia’s Strategic Rocket Forces, the Pacific Fleet, and the Northern Fleet are involved.
🔹 The drills will include launches of ballistic and cruise missiles at test ranges inside Russia.
🔹 Eight strategic nuclear submarines will participate.
🔹 More than 200 missile launch systems will be involved in the May 19–21 exercises.
🔹 Russian forces will also rehearse the joint preparation and use of nuclear weapons deployed in Belarus.

You can watch fire, water, and the erosion of state capacity in Russia for hours. The Kremlin is undermining the basic contract — taxes in exchange for security. The Finmin refuses to make drone defense spending tax-deductible, while dutifully raising taxes every year. Companies are building makeshift defenses from metal cables and nets, as military rents flow into the federal budget and the costs of war are shifted onto company balance sheets and regional governments. dispatching who pays for UAF drone attacks in Russia for @CEIP_Politika
