Stop putting a medicine in everyone’s bread. This needs to end now.

From late 2026, non-wholemeal wheat flour in the UK must be fortified with synthetic folic acid. That means most white bread, pizza bases, cakes, pastries and countless everyday foods will contain it whether you want it or not.

Folic acid is a pharmaceutical form of folate, not the same as folate in food. The stated aim is to reduce neural tube defects in a relatively small number of pregnancies. It does not justify treating the whole population as a patient.

The NHS itself lists groups who should avoid folic acid because of possible harm, including people with cancer, a coronary stent, or low vitamin B12. Even if those people know the risk, choice is shrinking: some wholemeal and gluten-free products are adding it voluntarily too.

Mass medication without individual consent is not “public health” in any honest sense. Targeted advice and supplementation for women planning pregnancy already exist. People who need to avoid this should still be able to buy ordinary flour and bread!

Tonight feels like we’ve all come to the end of that book that was always on our bedside table. We all read the chapters, some were good, some sad, some full of drama, some surprising. We all loved that book and although we’re sad the book has ended, it was the end we hoped for.
