As a dean, it is heartbreaking when foreign students ask if they are safe studying here.
As an economist, I worry about the effects on our great country. My latest

Diversification is hard. China controls a large share of global supply and US controls a large share of global demand. Other countries want to replace China in production--not so much in consumption, despite consumption being the ultimate goal.
💸 Dean @CarolineFreund recently joined as an expert guest for a @planetmoney episode to discuss the bigger picture of trade policy. Freund also explains how "protectionism" can directly impact our daily consumption of basic goods like sugar. 🎧 https://t.co/vMLxG38bed #Tariffs
I’m against tariffs—a trade war would be terrible—but exaggerating their dangers could backfire. The biggest risk from raising tariffs has (so far) been dodged.

International students bring a diversity of views & experiences + education is a major US export.
Yet student visa appointments are scarce in select countries. Even allies like Japan. Makes me worry that student visas are now chips in trade negotiations.

Controlling for transshipment and de minimis, we show that China is being replaced by . . China in US market.
As direct imports from China fall, goods entering through transshipment and de minimis increase.

A great example of how University research saves lives. AI cameras developed and run out of UC San Diego spot wildfires before they spread. https://t.co/xskwGX4Zn9
In this episode of "Driven to solve," professor @KyleLHandley addresses his research focus on the process of how policy is made – and in some cases, unmade – and how it can create uncertainty for people making economic, business or investment decisions: https://t.co/NgghNyhkR9
Using product-level data, I estimated the share of US imports from Mexico and Vietnam that are likely to be transshipped from China.

I learned a lot in Tokyo from our amazing @GPS_UCSD alumni! Originally an International Relations and Pacific Studies (IRPS) program, we continue to have strong links with Asia.
GPS was privileged to have alumna Liliana Ferrer-Silva ’91 — who serves as the Ambassador of Mexico to Thailand, concurrent in Cambodia — to address the Class of 2024. #GPSCommencement
Commencement marks the end of your time as a student at GPS, but it’s only the beginning of your journey to making your mark on global affairs. Congratulations, Class of 2024! #GPSCommencement#GPSProud
This incredible tool from @KyleLHandley@GPS_UCSD lets you examine Biden tariffs and trade.
Examples:
Immediate 100% tariffs on goods we don't import from China, like cars
Delayed 25% tariffs on goods w/ hi dependence on China, like magnets
