In Cognitive Behavior Therapy, we work with people to question whether thoughts or worries “fit the facts.” For example, we ask people with anxiety if their fear is accurate – and it often isn’t.
This semester concern was raised about a photo in a textbook that could be potentially triggering for some students (image of a person actively engaged in self-harm). Based on this student identified concern the publisher was contacted and the image redacted from future printing.
While gathering information for a class assignment today I came across a listing for my local crisis pregnancy center that said it was related to family planning/pregnancy.
I called. No birth control options provided. So why the guise?

Survivors have long told us what words not to use: “relax,” “just relax,” or “open wide.”
Written out of context perhaps these words look obvious. But care providers in all roles of our teams say these without a second thought.
Revisit your scripts to find new language.
