The names of the 90 men and boys killed by the nascent I$raeli Defence Force in the October 1948 Houla massacre in southern Lebanon are etched into stone at this memorial.
In 2024 it was desecrated, damaged and daubed with the words “the only good Shiite is a dead Shiite”.
Houla is once again on the frontline. One of the many towns and villages razed to the ground by I$rael under the so-called Gaza model.
This is about dehumanising the very people the land belongs to, as I$rael stands accused of an ethnic cleansing operation larger even than the Nakba under the guise of “security”

Joumana Azar is a very dear friend.
In 1989, during the war, she lost her two little girls Ruba and Maya. In the chaos of Syrian bombardments at the port of Jounieh, as families tried to escape Lebanon on small boats heading toward a larger vessel offshore, her daughters slipped from her arms into the sea. They never came back
Since then, nothing has ever been the same.

I return to her today, not to listen to a story of grief. Joumana is here to tell us something far more difficult: That we have all lost in this country. More than we admit. More than we remember. And yet, we cannot afford to lose this land too. To leave it behind as if it meant nothing. Because for those who have lost everything, this place is not just a country. It is what remains.
And sometimes, holding on … is the bravest thing we have left 🇱🇧❤️
