Will AI-generated art kill the art profession?
There's much speculation about this. But not much experimental evidence. So we designed an expertiment to compare the use of generative AI (text-to-image models) by 50 artists vs laypeople. We had two tasks:
1. Copying task: Designing a prompt for Stable Diffusion to copy a given image;
2. Creative task: Designing a prompt to get as far as possible from a given image;
We even asked a #GPT4o agent to perform the same task.
In a nutshell:
- The expertise of artists allows them to use generative AI more effectively than lay persons.
- AI is actually pretty good at using itself to generate art, but the best artists are still human!
