Pep is gone. The system that made City the destination for technical midfielders is being rebuilt from scratch. Maresca’s at Chelsea doing something similar with more clarity. United under Carrick are actively building a young, hungry midfield core with Mainoo, and Possibly Matheus already there.
At City, Anderson risks becoming a squad player in transition. At United, he walks into a setup that actually needs his energy and dynamism — and gets to grow alongside a generation rather than fight for minutes in a rebuilding project with 115 charges against them.
City’s pull used to be Pep’s system turning players into elite. That selling point is gone. Name, history and wage packet isn’t enough when your project is unclear.
If Anderson is smart, he asks: where do I actually play and develop? Right now that answer isn’t the Etihad.

West Ham are not in a position of strength here. No PL football, a squad that needs rebuilding for
the championship, and a player who’s almost certainly made his ambitions clear. Time is on United’s side.
£80m for Mateus Fernandes is West Ham testing the market, not setting it. He’s really talented but that fee assumes peak valuation in a negotiation where the seller has limited leverage.
Carrick’s United waiting it out tells you the recruitment structure has changed. Old United panicked and overpaid. New United anchors a price and lets the market move toward them.
Get him for £55-60m in late July and that’s a brilliant piece of business. 🔴

We don’t need Romero. We need a striker, a left winger depth option, a cover for LB and potentially 2/3 dynamic midfielder. Spending £60-70m on a centre-back when Martinez is elite, Yoro is a generational talent in development, and Heaven is knocking on the door would be a catastrophic misread of squad priorities.
The Romero links always felt like agent noise anyway. He’s a brilliant player but he’s also 27, Spurs will demand top dollar, and that money has better destinations in this squad.
What this actually tells you is Carrick and the recruitment team have a clear picture of the hierarchy of needs. They’re not being distracted by shiny names in positions that don’t require investment.
Fix the midfield situation. Fix the left side. Let the back four develop organically and a cover for the ST if Zirkzee leaves. it’s already got the bones of something special with Martinez and Yoro as the long-term pairing. 🔴
