Today, we celebrated the Class of 2021 AND the Class of 2020.
They’ve been through a lot during their sixty weeks of Brandcenter. We couldn’t be prouder of their grit, determination, flexibility, and creativity.
Give it up for these grads.

When a lock does it's job, it's pretty boring.
Second-year creative team Meghan Callaghan (AD, 2021) and Zeke Handelman (CW, 2021) leveraged this “negative” in a campaign for Master Lock.

It’s here—Election Day 2020.

Chelsie is currently finishing work with two Carriage House partners: local biz Professional Art Handling, and one of her favorite TikTokers, David Suh. Of her summer experience, Chelsie said: “I've learned that we are far more capable than we think. Goodbye imposter syndrome!”
As we wrap up the summer, we’re reflecting on the contributions of our members and the great strides they’ve made in just a few short months. Chelsie Kelly (CW ‘21) has been with us since the Carriage House was naught but a vague dream.
Everyone at Brandcenter knows Chelsie is the busiest of bees: from repping the copywriters in our student government to working on Brandcenter’s Side Hustle club to throwing the raddest Halloween parties, she’s someone you can count on to lend her voice and talents.
In true Tom fashion, he offered many nuggets of wisdom, but we thought this one was the wisest and nuggetiest:
“Don’t be afraid of the hard accounts. They are opportunities in disguise. Be fearless. When you’re fearless, you can turn something poisonous into something special.”
Last autumn, @vcu_brandcenter welcomed Tom Scharpf, a class of ‘98 alumni, former creative director at Leo Burnett and Venables Bell & Partners, and industry veteran of brands like Reebok, Google, and Audi.
Your Carriage House art directors and copywriters are big Tom fans (because just one of his slideshow lectures will honestly change your life). So we asked Tom what advice he could give young creative problem solvers after his 20+ years in the industry.
“I’ve always believed that creativity can be a powerful force for social change,” they said. “I was the lead creative for the campaign that took down the judge that sentenced Brock Turner. The mailers and social posts that I made on the East Coast helped take down a judge!”
Most of us with The Carriage House will be entering our second year at @vcu_brandcenter - but we recruited some of our friends in the class of 2020 as well. Meet Shelby Bass (AD ‘20) - our classmate, friend, mentor, and now, one of the newest art directors at DDB Chicago!
Shelby is active in social justice work, and has spent their summer working on their passion project: a platform for connecting LGBTQ youth with LGBTQ elders for mentorship, called The Tributary Project. They expect the prototype to go live in the next couple of months.
When @VCU_Brandcenter asked us to take over their Insta last week, we found ourselves wishing we could all gather to celebrate our last weeks of summer break and snap a few pics for the gram. Alas, COVID is a wicked mistress. We ended up crafting this 🔥 video montage instead!
