Is it because people think “literacy” is just learning how to read? Because it’s a whole lot more than that. Literacy is critical thinking and writing and using those inferences and conclusions to solve complex problems. All the skills necessary to be successful — even in STEM.
I am always amazed at how a lot of research in education focuses on literacy skills as the necessary foundation for post-secondary success AND YET the public focus and funding is on STEM.
That’s not a knock on STEM, which is important to pursue and learn especially in the way the world is changing and growing. It just kind of baffles me that there isn’t the same focus on literacy.
I’ve not been as active on Twitter in a long time. Now, there is Threads, and I find myself turning there more often. My plan is to post here to reconnect to everyone, but I will be making the move fully to Threads at some point. Probably when hashtags get activated.
And it is done! Submitted my final essay of my final class (not counting the project) at St. Mary’s. Soon, I will be able to add Master of Arts in English to my list of unlocked achievements. 🥰
Thought I’d play a little selection from Vivaldi’s *Autumn* tonight (now that I’ve sort of got my flute chops back). My fingers are still stiff and hitting that super low, below the staff C was a bit of a reach, but I really love playing again.
A major goal for me is to foster a love for literature in my students which requires space in class for choice reading and reading for pleasure. The far majority of my students will not be English majors, but I hope they will be life long readers. #MondayMotivation
I am absolutely GUTTED by the events at end of Thunderhead (Scythe #2).
Why didn’t anyone prepare me for what happens to Scythe Curie?!
I am over here ugly crying in my kitchen and I AM NOT OKAY! 😭
