In my telling, Gorbachev ended the Cold War when he refused to use force to preserve Soviet domination of Central Europe. Asked later whether Moscow should have sent in the tanks, Putin demurred. Today, in Ukraine, we see Putin’s answer and the difference between the two men.
We were fortunate to have Gorbachev. Without him the collapse of Soviet republics could have been much more bloody right away.
In many ways, he was ahead of time and in some not bold enough. But he was definitely not an average Russian/Soviet leader
Although I couldn’t make it to Lisbon, it was an absolute honor to virtually speak on the history of #NATO nuclear deterrence & nuclear sharing at #EISS2021. Thanks to @EISSnetwork for a great conference day 1! 🇪🇺🇵🇹
Pleasure sitting down this Saturday with @NATO PDD's for a digital mini version of the Youth Engagement Meeting that took place in 2018 (leading to the creation of the #NATOEngagement@Facebook group). We are looking forward hosting a physical version when #Covid_19 allows it!
Today we remember and honour all those who have made sacrifices for our freedom, and we thank the women and men of our armed forces who continue to keep us safe. In #NATO we stand 30 Allies strong, preventing conflict and preserving peace – all for one, one for all. #VEDay76
The title of this article is slightly misleading. The nuclear command & control architecture hasn’t changed and will not change just because of a conversation between the Speaker of the House & CJCS.
Nancy Pelosi said in a letter yesterday that she's spoken to the Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Mark Milley about preventing Trump from accessing the nuclear codes.
Her message surfaced an uncomfortable reality about America's nuclear control structure. https://t.co/alm2fCJByy
