LHP Josh Hartle (@WakeBaseball) is perhaps the most advanced arm in the country. After a strong showing in 2022 on the Cape (2.65 ERA, 13 K to 0 BB in 17 IP), Hartle in 2023 enjoyed a spectacular Sophomore season in which he had an 11-2 record, 2.81 ERA, and 140 K to just 24 BB in 102.1 IP. Hartle was a First Team All-American and had a summer stint with Team USA.
Long, lanky build at 6-foot-5 and 200-lbs. Attacks from a three-quarters slot and has an easy, aesthetically pleasing operation. Very advanced mechanically, controls his body really well.
Hartle's fastball last year sat in the 89-92 range, but this fall he has taken a step forward in the velocity department and has added a couple of ticks to his heater. 28% miss rate in '23, routinely flashes heavy sinking life.
Features two breaking balls. Low-80s curveball will take on an 11-5 shape with sharp break and big depth at times. 48% miss rate and .127 OBA in '23. Average spin rate was north of 2,700 rpm.
Low-80s SL is also plenty effective. A bit shorter in shape, can back foot it to RHH and land for strikes. Hartle's high-80s cutter is also a plus pitch. Really gets in on the hands of RHH. Plenty of horizontal movement.
Hartle has the best control and command of any arm in this year's Draft class. Could absolutely pitch his way into the first ~25 overall picks.
Another reason. Jonathan Vastine @VandyBoys vs Josh Hartle @WakeBaseball both 2024 Day One #MLBDraft prospects.
Hartle the top ranked LHP up to 94 with lively cut on his FB and spinnng his trademark plus CB.
Wake leads 1-0, end 2

Josh Hartle was electric with his curveball for @WakeBaseball in 2023
With this pitch he generated a:
46% Whiff (D1 Avg. 30%)
46% Chase (D1 Avg. 18%)
38% Put Away (D1 Avg. 22%)
Opposing hitters only had a .188 SLG / .170 wOBA on the curveball
