🔸 October 10 - The Holy 26 Martyrs of Zographou ⛪🔥🔸
Today, we commemorate the Holy 26 Monastic Martyrs of the Bulgarian Monastery of Zographou on Mount Athos. These martyrs were burned alive in 1282 by a Latin army for their refusal to accept a new union between the Byzantine Empire and the Pope of Rome.
In 1274, at the Council of Lyons in France, the Byzantine Emperor Michael VIII Palaiologos entered into a union with the Pope of Rome, hoping that this alliance would strengthen his waning empire from the encroaching threat of the Bulgars, Serbs and Turks. This union was not well received in the Orthodox East however, so the Emperor forcefully imposed it by issuing an edict in 1278.
The monks of Mt Athos were staunch in their opposition to the union, and sent a letter to the Emperor expressing the heresies of the Pope and the Roman Catholic Church, and urging him to reject this union and return to Orthodoxy. The emperor despised the monks for their opposition, but since he did not want to provoke the Greeks, he decided to vent his spite upon the Athonite Slavs. Hiring Latin crusaders as well as Turks and Tartar mercenaries, he sent them to Mt Athos to coerce the monks into submission and persecute those who refused.
The crusaders attacked many of the Slavic monasteries. Having beheaded, hanged, and drowned many monks at the monasteries of Vatopaidi, Iveron and Karyes, the Latins also attacked the Zographou Monastery. Many of the Zograohou monks had fled the impending attack, but 26 steadfast monks remained in the monastery tower: the abbot Thomas, the monks Barsanuphius, Cyril, Michaeas, Cosmas, Hilarion, James, Job, Cyprian, Sabbas, James, Martinian, Cosmas, Sergius, Minas, Joasaph, Ioannikios, Paul, Anthony, Euthymios, Dometian, Parthenios and 4 laymen.
Arriving at the monastery gates, the Latins told the monks that if they acknowledged the primacy of the Pope, they would have nothing to fear and would receive much gold. After the monks refused, the Latins gathered wood around the tower and lit a large fire. The holy martyrs sang hymns to the Mother of God while the tower burned, and thus they delivered their souls on this day in 1282.
I ask for prayers🙏🏻
I have caused division with myself and my family over my excitement coming to Orthodoxy.
In my eagerness to share I have caused fights and arguments that are detrimental to our Lord, Jesus Christ.
I need to be humble and learn before trying to talk. ☦️
I have heard Orthodox Christians fast on Wednesdays and Fridays.
I have heard Wednesday is to remember the betrayal of Judas Iscariot.
I am excited to take part in this for my Lord Jesus Christ ☦️
The 12-year-old martyr Irene was roasted in a barrel by the Sunni Turks at Easter in 1463, 10 years after the fall of Konstantinople. Rafael was horribly tortured and then hanged from a tree. All of this happened because they refused to apostatize their faith. They remained Greek Christians Orthodox until the end
@howlinghowler_ I'm inquiring; is this the 1st I should read before anything else?
Watching a lot of Jay Dyer, Father Moses McPherson, and Josiah Trenham
🔸 October 5 – Saint Charitina of Amisus 🔸
Today we commemorate the Holy Virgin-Martyr Saint Charitina of Amisus. She suffered for Christ in 304 AD during the persecutions of the Roman Emperor Diocletian. St Charitina was born in Amisus of Pontus (today Samsun, Turkey) in 287 AD. Orphaned at a young age, she became a servant to an eminent Christian man named Claudius who raised her as his own daughter. The young Charitina was very beautiful, humble, kind and meek.
She studied the law of God day and night and vowed to live in virginity as a bride of Christ. Though not baptized, she imparted her love for Christ to others, converting many pagans to the way of salvation. This caught the attention of the pagan governor Dometius who sent a letter to Claudius demanding that he deliver Charitina to him. Claudius grieved at the prospect of losing Charitina, but the young martyr comforted him saying: “Do not grieve, my Master, but rejoice, for I am to be reckoned to be close to God, as an acceptable sacrifice for my sins and for yours.”
Charitina was brought to trial asked by the judge if she had been deluding people by bringing them to Christianity. To this she courageously replied: “It is true that I am a Christian, and a lie that I delude others. I lead those in error to the way of truth, bringing them to my Christ.” The judge sentenced the young Saint to the cruelest tortures; hot coals were placed on her head, flaming rods were driven through her breasts, and vinegar was poured on her wounds. Charitina’s hair was then cut off, and she was tied to a stone and thrown into the sea.
The saint joyfully accepted this torment as her baptism, and miraculously, she emerged from the sea unharmed. She was then bound to a wheel which began to turn over burning coals, but an Angel of God stopped the wheel and Charitina again remained unharmed. This was followed with them removing the nails from her hands and her feet. The wicked judge then sent some dissolute youths to rape Charitina. The Saint prayed for the Lord to receive her into his eternal Kingdom, and in that moment, she delivered her soul before these dissolute men could defile her virginal body.
If anyone sees this:
Am I worthy to set up a Prayer corner? Is it allowed for Non-Baptized Orthodox?
How should I prepare it?
I assume I should ask my Father for the guidance of what to pray?
