Humans are biologically monogamish cooperative breeders, not a tournament species.

The ratio of females to males that reproduced during Paleolithic (first 190,000 years of human evolution) was 1.1-1.4 based on autosomal DNA.

That means comparable numbers of men and women reproduced (especially in East Asia, where ratio was 1.1), and that’s still probably more due to coalition violence and constraints of menopause than polygyny.

Even the Y bottleneck that emerged after the move to agriculture was probably mostly a functional of increased coalition violence, though polygyny also increased.

This data from surviving tribes shows HG societies had much lower rates of polygyny than primitive agrarian societies.

But realistically these data biased towards higher male relative to female reproductive success variance because they are low latitude tribes, which historically had more polygyny. Polygyny decreases and reverses to polyandry as you get farther from equator.

The most successful civilizations have been monogamy based. Across humans and other animals, violence and instability tend to rise when male sexual/reproductive participation variance is high, especially when female variance is low.
