Meet our Fellows!

Maria Natalia Marin Suarez is a Ph.D. student in Education at the Universidad de los Andes (Colombia), researching the impact of gratitude on learning. She holds a B.A. in History from Universidad de los Andes and an M.Ed. with an emphasis in Children's Literature from the University of Cambridge (UK). Here's why she wanted to be part of this special cohort:

"Across my experiences in Latin America, Europe, Asia, and North America, I have seen how SEL empowers individuals and communities to thrive, from classrooms to conflict-affected contexts. Advancing SEL globally is essential because it bridges cultural differences while grounding us in shared values of empathy, collaboration, and care."

Students are missing more than 200 million additional school days annually compared with before COVID.

That’s an astounding number and a challenge educators across the country are working hard to address.

Even as public debate around social-emotional learning (SEL) continues, one thing has remained remarkably consistent: educators continue to see its value.

According to a new Education Week survey, the majority of teachers, principals, and district leaders believe SEL has had a positive impact on both students' academic success and their social development.

That's encouraging to see because SEL is about more than improving grades. It's about helping students develop the skills they need to navigate challenges, build healthy relationships, manage emotions, and thrive, in school and beyond.

No matter where the conversation goes, these life skills continue to matter.

As we've mentioned recently, chronic absenteeism is an issue we're paying close attention to. In fact, we've invested the time to develop a new course designed to help schools address absenteeism and create learning environments where students want to be.
