@SpaceBoffin @MerriamWebster I'm going to disagree (strongly) on that one. Particularly in the technical world, although AP style also agrees, 'data' is a collective noun. It takes the singular when treated as a unit, and plural when referring to individual items.

Most nutritional (and related) studies are not based on "data" as most people expect and understand it; they're based on a fictional approximation of vaguely remembered data. The quality is similar to telling time by looking at the sun.

@AdamKinzinger These kinds of nutritional studies should be taken with a serious grain (block) of salt. These longitudinal studies use self-reported data from questionnaires. They're one (small) step above useless.
