There are not enough words in the dictionary to express the magnitude of the transformation this man has undergone. Chef Tom Goetz is the son of the late, great Kay Arthur, and while she was ministering to the world and owning her testimony, he was growing hate on the back burner. When church hurt comes from your own family, God can seem like the problem. Humanity delivers the hatred, and through great loss, traumatic upbringing, and being forced to grow up far too early in life, Chef Tom finds himself full of hatred until a deliverance in a freezer. When I tell you that I read his memoir Hating God and most of His people a journey of Kay Arthur’s Son to healing in less than 48 hours, I mean it. If I didn’t have responsibilities and a need to sleep, it would have been sooner. Through tear filled eyes, I found myself laughing hysterically. The wit and raw honesty is unmatched. If you read only one book this year, let it be this one.

I never intended to write a book about my life.

Growth in the Grief began as a journal. A place to be honest. A place to wrestle with grief, faith, healing, and everything I was learning while trying to put myself back together.

But somewhere along the way, those private pages became something more.

Healing changed the way I looked at my life. It changed the way we parented. It helped lead us toward homeschooling and homesteading, toward slowing down, being more intentional, and creating a home where our kids could see that adults don’t have everything figured out either.

A home where mistakes aren’t something to fear.

Where our kids have room to fail, learn, try again, ask hard questions, and watch us do the same.

And eventually, the journal I wrote to help heal myself became Growth in the Grief, a ministry tool meant to sit beside someone else while they walk through their own hard places.

I had the opportunity to share a little of that story with Tina Griffin on the @culture78558 Counter Culture Mom Show. ❤️

Sometimes the thing God uses to help you survive one season becomes the thing He uses to help someone else survive theirs.
