"The gift was never a reward for good decisions."
"It was a lesson in freedom."
Nobody understood what he meant.
Years later, the cousin who wasted her money became a financial advisor.
She often says blowing that $500 was the cheapest mistake she ever made.
The cousin who spent hers wisely graduated debt-free and built a successful career.
Both of them still talk about Grandpa's rule.
One learned from getting it wrong.
The other learned from getting it right.
Grandpa passed away years ago, but I still think about that whenever people argue over who deserves a chance.
Sometimes equal treatment doesn't produce equal outcomes.
And sometimes that's exactly the point.
My grandfather had a rule:
Every grandchild got $500 on their 18th birthday.
No exceptions.
When my cousin turned 18, he gave her the money.
Instead of using it for school, she spent almost all of it on clothes, parties, and a new phone.
The family was furious.
"You should have given it to someone who would use it wisely."
Grandpa just shrugged.
A few years later, another cousin turned 18.
She was responsible, hardworking, and had already been accepted into university.
Grandpa gave her the same $500.
She complained.
"Why does she get the same amount after wasting hers?"
Grandpa replied:
Juneteenth is more than a celebration…it is a reminder of the strength, resilience, and perseverance of Black people. Even after enduring slavery, segregation, discrimination, and every obstacle placed in our path, we continue to rise, create, lead, and inspire.
Today we honor those who came before us, those who fought for freedom they were denied, and those whose sacrifices made our progress possible. We celebrate Black excellence, Black culture, Black joy, and the unbreakable spirit that has carried us through generations.
Freedom was delayed…but our strength never was. Black history is American history. Black excellence is forever.
Have a beautiful Juneteenth, and continue walking in your power, purpose, and pride. ✊🏾🖤❤️💚

Barack and I never did anything alone. Through two national campaigns, eight years in the White House, and in all the years since, we had an incredible team backing us up and pushing us forward.
It was such a joy to be back together with so many of the alumni who’ve supported us over the years. We’ll forever be grateful for their work, and our country is better off thanks to their service. We love you. 💗
When you’re young and drop something, you just pick it up.
When you’re older and drop something, you stare at it for a while, wondering if you actually need it anymore.
