NEW: Vladimir Putin spent most of his call with the leaders of Finland and Norway ranting about Slavic history, underscoring Europe's tough task backing Ukraine in peace talks.
The planned 20-minute call dragged on for 90. A ceasefire barely came up:

@NewLeftEViews Such ragebait. Imagine writing a pro/con article about billionaires and failing to mention political influence/power and democratic implications whatsoever.
"We estimate that Mr Trump’s policies will cost the poorest tenth of American households, with average income after taxes and transfers of around $37,000, almost 3% of their income. The richest tenth, with average after-tax incomes of nearly $500,000, will gain nearly 3% (see chart 1). Households in the middle, with average income of roughly $100,000, lose more than $400"
@JaneParkway@cszabla Cuba has also gotten worse lately but probably has the potential for a major boom. Proximity to US and high levels of literacy and education, very engaged diaspora, comparatively strong health outcomes, solar/electrification as quick fix for energy dependency etc.
Lula victory speech:
"We had to overcome foreign interference through digital platforms, which we will have to regulate.
We cannot have monstrously huge corporations earning millions & billions, paying no taxes to this country & trying to steer this country's election results."
Democrats should realize that what Meta did in Brazil, they and other social media companies will do in the US in 2028 unless they are made to understand they will face criminal penalties for it
Regarding Russian conscripts, this is not the case. The overwhelming percentage of Russian forces fighting in this war are men well over 30 who accepted service contracts for money. They were not conscripted, or mobilized. For more on this topic: https://t.co/YF6aIj7qDE
This is Novi Sad, the site of the horrific awning collapse that killed 16 people, sparking the massive student-led protests that led to Vučić's demise two years later.
Seeing the entire place bounce like this is truly a once-in-a-lifetime thing.
@testingham@humford „ceiling of rational inquiry” also misconstrues his narrative (a departure from the belief in monism towards pluralism). Christians were not engaged in pushing the ceiling of rational inquiry, yet Berlin squarely places them within the monist paradigm preceding romanticism.
@testingham@humford I like your metaphor with the shards but besides that „finally hit the ceiling of rational inquiry” is an overly teleological reading of his account. And “untie the same knot” implies a kind of universalist pereniallism which, I think, goes against his cultural/value pluralism.
There was a chap at Oxford who came up in the 80s to research the 4 year tenure of a Yorkshire bishop. He spent 40 years on it, draining an inheritance left on condition it was spent on his education. Daily Mass (sometimes several times a day), lobster every day at Brown's next to the Oratory (hence the gout), magnificent dinner parties for miscreants, oddballs and grad students, and generous to charity. His fingers were so fat that his signet rings appeared stuck to them. Having spent every last penny, he was evicted from his apartment and became a monk some 3 years ago. No wife, no kids, and I don't think the DPhil ever got finished.
Top 5 most eccentric human beings I’ve met in my life. Bless him.
