Completely humbled by this amazing feedback from this wonderful gent, who gave me his blessing to share the whole email. Here it is, spoilers redacted. My eldest son is reading it. Younger 2 aren't interested. My wife doesn't know it exists yet. #itscomplicated 😢
ED DAVEY: LIED TO, HE SAYS
Paul Brand @PaulBrandITV of @ITVNews asked Ed Davey 10 times in one interview to say sorry to Post Office victims. Watch the clip. Each time he offered regret.
That was 12 January 2024. The story starts 14 years earlier.
In May 2010 a man asked his minister for a meeting about a scandal wrecking lives. The minister replied that a meeting would serve no useful purpose.
The man was Alan Bates. The minister was Ed Davey , now leader of the Liberal Democrats. The company was the @PostOffice. The government owned 100% of it.
Alan Bates, a former postmaster, spent years telling people in power. Ed Davey was one of them. I went through the evidence so you do not have to. Here is what is on the record.
Ed Davey replied to Alan Bates that he did not believe a meeting would serve any useful purpose and that the government kept an arm's length relationship with the Post Office. Alan Bates told the Inquiry the reply looked like a template and he found it offensive. He wrote back to remind the minister that the government owned all the shares.
The meeting finally happened in October 2010, 5 months after the first request. A civil service briefing shown to the Inquiry advised a meeting for presentational reasons, given potential publicity. Ed Davey says that was not why he agreed.. In July 2024 he told the Inquiry he could not remember reading the first letter. The public gallery groaned.
After the meeting Ed Davey passed on Alan Bates's concerns, including a question about remote access to Horizon. Post Office executives said there was none. Ed Davey says they knew all along that there was. He named David Smith and Paula Vennells as the senior executives he dealt with and says he was lied to on an industrial scale.. Alan Bates has said civil servants handled Ed Davey.
Ed Davey later told @SkyNews that the arm's length system was wrong and broken. He used it in his own reply.
Before politics, Ed Davey was a consultant specialising in the postal services sector, according to his government biography. Then he became the postal minister. He still did not spot the Horizon problem.
January 2024 brought the @ITV drama Mr Bates vs The Post Office and calls for Ed Davey to hand back his knighthood.
@Telegraph reported the 10 refusals the next morning. The Lib Dems asked @Ofcom to investigate @GBNEWS over its coverage of the scandal and its criticism of Ed Davey. A politician under pressure over declining a campaigner asked a regulator to look into a TV channel. Priorities.
In February 2024 Ed Davey said sorry in @guardian. In July 2024 he told the Inquiry he was sorry it took 5 months to meet Alan Bates and sorry he did not see through the Post Office's lies. He called his first reply poorly judged and terse.
In 2021 the law firm Herbert Smith Freehills (@hsflegal) paid Ed Davey £5,000 a month for 6 hours of advice, according to the MPs register of interests.
@DailyMailUK reported that the Post Office hired the same firm in 2019 to fight postmasters in court...
Ed Davey's team told the Mail he had no knowledge of that account and never discussed the Post Office with the firm. He quit the role in November 2021 during the MPs second jobs row.
Now to this month. On 9 October 2026 Charlie Maynard (@cammaynard), his own Treasury spokesperson, quit his post, reportedly to trigger a no confidence vote in Ed Davey.
On 13 October the Lib Dem MPs held a marathon meeting. No vote happened. Daisy Cooper (@libdemdaisy) says MPs overwhelmingly back him. The latest YouGov poll has the party on 11%. He is still Sir Ed Davey.
The Inquiry has not ruled on Ed Davey yet. Sir Wyn Williams said in July 2026 that the rest of his report is still some months away. Postmasters are still fighting over redress in 2026.
Read the evidence, share this post and decide for yourself.

Legal regulators' Post Office probes "could fail" due to lack of powers.
The Horizon Compensation Advisory Board (HCAB) has expressed concern about the powers of legal regulators to investigate the lawyers involved in the Post Office Horizon scandal.

*CRIMINALS* DID THIS TO PEOPLE - and the UK Police forces seem reluctant to investigate. Too busy dealing with alleged “hurty words” to look into crimes that caused deaths and destroyed lives, it would seem.
They were mate. Gary Thomas, Dad's so-called investigator, admitted during the Post Office Horizon IT Inquiry that bonuses were being paid, and he also confirmed that, at the time, more money was being recovered than the value of the alleged shortfalls.
@CastletonLee The police are funded by the same source as the Post Office. Whenever a government funded organisation is at fault the wheels of justice turn slowly.
@CastletonLee You only have to watch this man for a minute or two and you get precisely the Post Office position and quality of their employees. Stephen Bradshaw at his best.
@knoweuro@steffiasot@ArturNadol7566@CastletonLee I think after the tv programme, the miscarriage of Justice was so obvious, everyone thought it would be cleared up immediately and most assumed it has been. This delay has compounded an enormous failure of the legal system and what an unnecessary blight on these innocent lives.
