The room got quiet the moment she said his name. I was cleaning the room when an older man from a care home walked in, guiding a very old woman by the elbow. She was close to ninety, wrapped in a long coat, hands trembling like they couldn’t decide whether to hold on or let go. She looked at me and said, “Mallow.” Mallow was our senior dog. Gray on the muzzle, stiff in the hips, gentle in the way that makes you careful with your own voice. He didn’t spin at the gate or beg for attention. He watched people walk past and tried not to hope too loudly. I asked her if she wanted to sit first. She shook her head. “I just… I need to see him,” she said. I walked them down the hallway. She moved slowly, but she didn’t stop. At his kennel she gripped the rail with both hands and leaned forward, like her body knew the place before her mind caught up. Mallow lifted his head. For a second he looked blank, tired, like old dogs do when the world keeps changing. Then her scent reached him. His ears softened. His chest rose once, deep, like remembering hurt and comfort at the same time. I opened the gate and stepped back. Mallow walked out slowly, straight toward her, not rushing, not jumping. He pressed his head into her knees and stayed there, as if the floor finally felt steady. The woman lowered herself onto the bench with a quiet gasp and wrapped both arms around his neck. She started crying, then laughing, then crying again, kissing the top of his head like she was counting proof. “I didn’t leave you,” she kept whispering. “They took me. I tried to come back.” The man from the care home turned away. I did too, because that kind of reunion feels private even when you’re standing right there. Mallow didn’t pull away. He leaned harder into her chest, eyes closed, body heavy and calm, like his job was to hold her together. His tail moved once, then again, slow and sure. When she finally lifted her face, she looked at me and said, “Is he still kind?” I nodded. “He’s been waiting.” And for the first time all week, Mallow looked like he believed the door could open and stay open.

Visiblement très touché par la situation, le pompier a pris la parole pour interpeller les jeunes impliqués :

"Je suis dégoûté, vraiment dégoûté. On se fait agresser par des gosses de 14-15 ans. Pour porter cet uniforme, on laisse des familles derrière nous. On se fait caillasser par des gosses de 14 ans. Où sont les parents ? Vous êtes où ? Qui va sauver votre grand-mère pendant qu’on est en train d’éteindre vos poubelles ? Pendant que vous brûlez ce camion de pompiers, qui va sauver votre famille si votre maison brûle ? J’espère que vos parents vont être sanctionnés. Limite, je ne vous en veux même pas à vous, car vous avez 14 ans. J’en veux à vos parents. C’est pas possible qu’en France, on en arrive là."
