W KOREA INTERVIEW |
“ONLY I KNOW” Part 3/4
WK: You've said before that it's important to preserve who you are rather than let your profession define you. So, outside of work, who do you feel comfortable showing your true self to?
🐰: I don't have a particularly large circle of friends. And even the friends I do have are people the fans probably already know about.
I still meet up with friends I made back when I was working as a dancer in Gimpo. Whenever I say I'm meeting someone, it's usually one of them. We'll message each other on a whim, meet up for a meal, and that's about it.
WK: If someone wanted to get close to Lee Minho as quickly as possible, what should they do, and what should they avoid? Think of it as a kind of “user's guide to Lee Minho.”
🐰: First, they have to get inside my personal circle. But that's something I decide, so... there aren't really any set rules.
WK: That sounds very much like a cat owner. They have to earn LK's approval first, then?
🐰: Exactly. It all depends on whether I choose them, and even my criteria change from time to time. I just go with how I feel (Laughs)
If I had to name one requirement, though, they'd have to be willing to go out and eat delicious food with me. I'm the kind of person who travels mainly for the food.
As for what I don't like, it's people crossing the line. My standards aren't particularly high. If anything, they're pretty low. But if someone doesn't show basic courtesy, I just quietly stop contacting them.
WK: You once said, “I've never chased after anything in particular. I just kept going, and at some point, I achieved more than I expected. I never set out with a specific achievement in mind.” I find it interesting that you can be so relentless without having huge ambitions. You dance as if you're pushing your body to its limits onstage, and you consistently share videos of your vocal practice. What makes you work so hard?
🐰: As Lee Minho, the person, I don't have particularly big ambitions. I want a simple life, and I'm not someone who expects things to work out through luck or some stroke of fortune.
But when it comes to my work, I think I am ambitious.
When I first debuted, I felt that my singing skills were seriously lacking. I wanted to get better, so I started taking vocal lessons. But you can't suddenly become good at something overnight, can you? You have to keep working at it, digging deeper and deeper. I took lessons every day and kept practicing.
Little by little, all that work accumulated, and I think that's how I got to where I am today. I believe the way you work every day eventually determines the results you achieve. In a way, it's a very straightforward and honest process. It might even seem a little foolish or stubborn, but I like doing things that way.
That's also why I'm cautious about managing my money. I mainly stick to safe savings accounts... (Laughs)
