Anyone have any good resources for commonly used signs/gestures by peds patients in the hospital? I found the 2 below, but still missing a lot. #pedsICU, #aac, #ICUrehab, @sapnaKmd
i feel i am going crazy because why are the people who wanted leniency for insurrectionists calling for the national guard to be sent in on college students sitting on blankets and chanting?
No no no no NO. If patient not in full arrest (in which case you don’t need paralytic), they need some sedative no matter how sick. A small dose can go a long way. #PedsICU#PedsAnes#anesthesia#ICU
Never forget that toddlers reflect the words, actions, and attitudes of their caregivers. What does this morning greeting tell you about this classroom?
@pccm_doc not never but surprisingly limited. There are strict infection control rules, visitation restrictions, limited 'community' areas, etc. The majority of overhead pages are also adult related, and there are a lot, so easy to drown out

@EstherP210@SapnaKmd (3/3) I really appreciate your point though, and hadn't thought of it previously. Many kids know a version of a sign or will use their own, so this sheet will need to be broad but obv can't be all encompassing. We try to get SLP involved w/all these kids :)
@EstherP210@SapnaKmd (2/3) The nurse/RT/MD could use this resource sheet to determine that he is requesting suctioning. He doesn't know ASL but someone taught him that sign. That is what I'm trying to compile -a group of gestures that kids may use to indicate an emergent need
@EstherP210@SapnaKmd (1/3) This resource isn't to assist others in signing, its to help others figure out what a patient may be saying, esp in a pinch. Ex. 8 yr old w/a trach is pointing to his mouth repeatedly...at 3am in the PICU. He is in distress, trying to communicate something specific.
@EstherP210@SLTLoulou@SapnaKmd@MakatonCharity Thank you for your suggestion. I've been working w/SLPs and we have a number of communication boards, many using boardmaker. This resource is more for nurses to understand what a patient may be trying to sign, so that their immediate need can be met

As difficult as it may seem today, we must never lose hope that human beings, and their nations, can resolve international conflicts without bloodshed. We must never cease striving for a world of peace.
