Healthcare in Nigeria is one area we really need to pay more attention to, especially when it comes to the poor.

A lot of people are sick but cannot even afford the tests that will tell them what is actually wrong. They get to the hospital, hear how much the tests will cost and sometimes just go back home because they cannot afford it.

Some end up buying drugs based on symptoms or treating themselves, while the actual illness keeps getting worse. By the time they eventually get the right diagnosis, the situation may have become much more serious.

This is why basic medical tests should be subsidised and made affordable for the common man. Tests are not a luxury. You need proper diagnosis before you can give the right treatment. When people cannot afford diagnosis, wrong treatment becomes more likely, and this is part of the health challenge we are facing.

The government deserves appreciation for the efforts being made in the health sector, but honestly, there is still a lot more to do. Basic tests, drugs and other essential healthcare services should be within the reach of ordinary Nigerians.

This is also one of the reasons healthcare is a core part of the @mok_foundation’s mission. Through partnerships with some primary healthcare centres, the foundation has been able to support people who may otherwise not have been able to afford certain medical services.

The problem is too big for government alone. Organisations, individuals and communities all have a quota to contribute.

At the end of the day, nobody should have to choose between putting food on the table and finding out what is wrong with them.

We can and should do better.

Cancer is a big problem in our society and it almost seems like anyone can get it no matter how careful you are, but you can also do some things to protect yourself and loved ones.

Cut down:
• Charred suya, the black bits, processed meat, sausages and hot dogs used in shawarma etc
• Mouldy groundnut, maize, egusi
• Reused frying oil
• Sniper-preserved beans, formalin fish
• Alcohol (shayo sweet but think about the long term complications) and smoking
• Firewood & generator smoke indoors
• Skin lightening creams

Also do this:
• Test for Hepatitis B and vaccinate if negative, biggest cause of liver cancer in our society. Test for Hep C too (no vaccine, but it’s curable now with treatment)
• HPV vaccine + screening for the women you love, the biggest cause of cervical cancer in our society, and a rising cause of throat cancer
• Grill beside the coals, not over them
