The Open Source Academy is a Catalyst initiative designed to provide training & work experience in open source development for young New Zealand technologists.
Congratulations to our friends at Rotorua non-profit @DigitalMaori They've launched a new programme in a brand new 1100 sqm space, which takes an innovative approach to helping rangatira find their purpose and path.

With sadness we must announce @ibeardslee is leaving @catalystnz. He has coordinated and championed the Open Source Academy since 2011, encouraging over 200 rangatahi to engage with open source technologies. His guidance and wise counsel will be remembered!
We've had a couple of enquiries about the cost of our Open Source Academy in January.
As part of @CatalystNZ helping the next generation of technologist, we don't charge to attend the 2 weeks of learning about open source tools, technologies and processes.

As well as @catalystkoha, we have confirmed that our @GeoNode team are super keen to be one of the projects.
Send keen senior secondary school students to https://t.co/1OAZdb0FxK
@blackandbloo@catalystkoha@kohails Not necessarily based in Aotearoa, but having someone from the project in Wellington, in the room with the students would be optimal.
Are you running (or working with) an open source project with a welcoming community?
Our Open Source Academy in January is looking for another project that can guide a small group of senior secondary school students towards making a real contribution towards a real project.
This is exciting news!
We first met @aleishaamohia as a student in 2014, it was the 3rd Koha project @ranginui was mentoring in our Academy. Fabulous opportunities to continue making a difference.
Their strong values and knowledge will continue to have a place in what we do.
During our Academy @russelg takes the students through a Requirements Analysis and User Stories session. He is an @ICAgile certified trainer and is running a 2 day Product Owner Fundamentals course in Auckland next week. Mention the Academy & get 20% off!

Exciting times! We have now opened the registrations to our 2023 Open Source Academy.
If you know a senior secondary school student keen to dig deeper into technology, send them along to https://t.co/mrQv8GkSQy to fill in the registration form.
We are so grateful for the support from the @kohails community. People from around the world helping our students learn how to contribute to open source software .. a fantastic introduction to a big wide world.
Tomorrow @aleishaamohia will present the closing talk for Day 2 of #kohacon22 "Saving Kittens and Supporting Koha" about how the community gets behind the @CatalystAcademy and high school students become Koha developers! 4.15pm Central Time (GMT-5), 9.15am NZST, 7.15am AEST
Just had a quick discussion in-house and we are all go for the 2023 Open Source Academy!
2 weeks 9th-20th January, we gather a bunch of keen senior secondary school students to learn about open source technology and tools, and then work on a real open source project.
During our Academy, we teach some use of the shell and scripting, and some basic python.
@CatalystNZ are running some more in-depth in-person courses that help you learn some new skills ..

We do love seeing the journey our Open Source Academy students are making for themselves, the growth that they have built from the small step we have provided for them.

Unfortunately we have had to cancel the NZOSA gala dinner on Feb 8 due to the nationwide Red setting. We will be in touch with all finalists and attendees and we are making alternative plans for announcing the winners. More updates to come. ^CW
“My work in open source software fits nicely alongside Māori values, which revolve around openness, collaboration & teamwork at every stage!" @VicUniWgtn grad Aleisha Amohia has the coolest tech gig at @CatalystNZ https://t.co/vLWfpeQWYL
Today would normally be the start of another Open Source Academy. But in August, when we needed to start preparing for the Academy, there was a lot of uncertainty around our Covid Alert levels.
We just couldn't risk student health & holiday/travel plans.
