🥳On November 29th, Physics staff, alumni and students celebrated 175 years of Physics at UCC.
🌳 A Rowan Tree, known for protection and luck, now grows on campus for all Physics staff and students.
🌃Thanks to everyone that made the celebrations enjoyable!
Researchers at @UCC's @MacroQuantumMat Group have used a Scanning Tunnelling Microscope (STM) to write "UCC" with Caesium atoms on a CsV3Sb5 (CVS) sample.

My hot take after reading the word “industry” 1000 times in relation to science funding:
Industry should never drive or direct our scientific pursuits. The free market shouldn’t (and really can’t) determine the value of knowledge.
Gotta say I really identified with the High Evolutionary in that moment when he was disgusted by the fact that his creations were only good at rote memorisation #GuardiansoftheGalaxyVol3
@shane_m_omahony@PWO_Ireland Correct Shane, but considering that half of 3rd level institutions are in Dublin or surrounding areas, it would be hard to avoid and this would still be a valid statistics for most PhD students in Ireland.
@BBCPallab@hmtreasury@10DowningStreet Is this 1.6bn from people taking their funding with them so it is unspent or have they completely reneged on this promise?
Dr Pádraig MacCárthaigh of Physics, UCC wrote an article for the Irish Examiner on the recent break-through in fusion energy research in California. Read the full article here: https://t.co/5NpX4kOlwz

Huge congratulations to Prof Séamus Davis of @UCC for becoming the first Irish scientist to win the prestigious Buckley Prize for his work in quantum physics!
18 previous winners of the award have gone on to win the Nobel Prize in Physics (no pressure)

For years I've been trying to get any proctoring company to agree to a study where I try to cheat. None have agreed. I've had legal advice not to do such a study without permission from the vendors.
I'm delighted to share that someone else has done one: https://t.co/VGN5dw7Mtc
✴️EXCITING✴️ opportunity for a SALI, Professorship of Quantum Technology in @Physics@UCC and @TyndallInstitut to create a world-class quantum physics research program. Full details here: https://t.co/R0zQnNDmb7 & job spec here: https://t.co/SwoYbqOsxK

It is our absolute pleasure to announce that we have won best new society in a large university at BICS, the national society awards of Ireland!!!
We couldn't have done it without our amazing committee members, and of course YOU, our members!!!
Our @OxInst PROTEOX Dilution Refrigerator has been installed in its custom-built ultra-low vibration enclosure. Things are ramping here in the Kane, and exciting science is to follow! #Cryogenics#Quantum#IrishScience
Just in time for St. Patrick's Day! ☘ Assembly of AQUILON, our first quantum microscope at UCC, has been completed. Exciting science is on the way, so stay tuned! #ExcitingTimes#IrishScience
