I rarely post pictures of myself anymore, because I've been going through some really hard times, and there are times when I haven't even wanted to look into the mirror, but I've reached another sober milestone, and I'm here, and as I approach 43 I'm unapologetically celebrating survival, life, and being Daddy to Leonardo, the light and the joy of my life. This is me, unfiltered and somehow unbroken. Friends, I hope you know the words of my poems, my novels, and all my books are truly for you, because if I've turned any of my hours of darkness—of psychosis, of mania, of depression, of addiction—into beauty, into even a shadow of grace, then this life will not have been lived in vain. I love you, unironically, messily, and as the awkward poet behind the poems. 🕊️

WOW. A teacher just told me, "I gave one of my 2nd grade (dyslexic) students your nature poetry prompt. He is reluctant to write because of challenges with spelling, but I suspect he’s gifted. I told him just to write and we’d sort out the spelling later. This is what he wrote."

To all those secret poets, too afraid to send your stuff off and too private to share it with the world: I remember I used to feel that way. But I say ‘DO IT’! It’s liberating to see your poems printed/to contribute to art, it’s worth the guts. You’ll never look back. But (1of2)
(2/2) know this: your work is as good as the next poet’s, ALL art is valid. And editors see all sorts. I rarely get time to submit poems, but when I do, it feels great. Just follow their submission guidelines and DO IT 🙌

Walking along the canal today with my wife, Indian heritage,I'm white. We passed a Chinese lady and black man couple, we all said "Morning! Lovely day" with a smile.
