During a traffic stop on a vehicle for a window tint violation, our officers uncovered an unreported shoplifting from Old Navy and recovered more than $1,000 worth of merchandise that had been stolen from a Bath & Body Works in Athens, Tennessee.

Further investigation revealed the passenger was in possession of a magnet commonly used to defeat retail theft deterrent devices. She was also found to have active warrants out of Sevier County for felony shoplifting and Knox County for a violation of probation related to a felony shoplifting conviction.

The 40-year-old driver and 41-year-old passenger, both from Chattanooga, were charged with theft related to the Old Navy incident. The passenger was additionally charged for possession of the theft device and served her outstanding warrants.

A sharp eye and a little curiosity can go a long way. Thanks to thorough police work, stolen merchandise was recovered, outstanding warrants were addressed, and local businesses received a little justice. We appreciate the officers who stay engaged and continue looking beyond the initial reason for a stop.
