When Elizabeth Taylor first met Maria, the little girl was only nine months old.

She was severely malnourished, covered in painful abscesses, and born with a hip deformity that doctors feared might prevent her from ever walking.

Elizabeth was in Germany filming Cleopatra when actress Maria Schell introduced her to the child. The baby lay quietly in a simple laundry basket cushioned by a pair of worn pillows. She neither cried nor smiled. She simply watched the world around her with large, solemn eyes.

Among Elizabeth's most cherished memories was hearing Maria speak her first word.

"Mama," she said.

Elizabeth later admitted that moment completely melted her heart.

Richard Burton adored Maria just as deeply.

His diaries reveal countless tender family moments. One evening in 1966, while sharing dinner together, he told five-year-old Maria the story of how she came into their lives. She listened with complete fascination. On another occasion, he wrote that Maria told him she loved him and wanted to be with him all the time—a simple declaration that meant the world to him.

The fragile baby who once lay forgotten in a laundry basket grew into a confident and accomplished woman.

Maria later built a successful career as a model, became a devoted mother to two children—Eliza and Richard, named in tribute to her parents—and eventually a proud grandmother.

More importantly, she inherited the compassion that defined Elizabeth Taylor. Throughout her life, Maria has supported children's charities and dedicated herself to helping young people facing difficult circumstances.

Her journey is a remarkable testament to what love, determination, and family can achieve.

A baby who was once overlooked and struggling for survival was given a chance because one woman refused to walk away.

A newborn died in Nashville overnight on September 10, 2001. His family, in the worst hours of their lives, decided to donate his organs. Only the liver could be used.

Early the next morning a match came back: a 6-month-old girl in Houston named Kareena, dying of liver failure. A charter plane was booked and the recovery surgery at Vanderbilt Children's Hospital was nearly finished. Then the country closed.

Jill Grandas ran Tennessee Donor Services. Her phone rang, and it was her own staff member standing in the operating room. "What are we going to do? No planes are allowed to leave the ground."

There was a liver in a cooler with hours left on it, a baby in Texas who did not have longer, and not one civilian aircraft in America was permitted to move. So Grandas reached for the phone book.

"Believe it or not, 20 years ago in the blue pages, there was a listing for the tower," she said.

Somebody at Nashville International picked up, handed her to a supervisor, and the supervisor's calls reached Senator Bill Frist, a transplant surgeon before he was a politician, who did not need the situation explained to him. The Tennessee Air National Guard was cleared to fly.

They started up a C-130 Hercules, an aircraft built to carry a tank, and put 10 ounces in it.

"We usually take some pretty interesting things in the back of a C-130," co-pilot John Howard said. "And that was probably the lightest payload, next to being empty, that I've ever flown in my life."

Nobody spoke for the first half of the flight. The sky was empty and patrolled by fighters, and the crew understood what could happen to an aircraft that appeared where it should not be. They landed in Houston and handed the cooler over without shutting down the engines.

Dr. John Goss was waiting at Texas Children's Hospital. The transplant went smoothly.

Kareena is 25 now. "All these people who didn't know this little baby, who had no connection with this child, worked together on a day that really tested our nation," she said.

This week, 25 years later, she finally met Jill Grandas in person.

The dog is a nine-year-old German Shepherd named Kodak. Paul's K9 partner for eight years.
Paul and Kodak were paired when Kodak was fourteen months old. They went through sixteen weeks of handler training together in Chesterfield County. They worked patrol, search operations, and community events together for eight consecutive years. Paul estimates they logged more than eleven thousand hours on duty together.
Kodak retired from active service fourteen months ago when his health began declining. He went home with Paul, as K9 partners typically do when they retire. Paul converted the back bedroom into a dog room. Kodak slept on a memory foam bed beside Paul's side of the bed.
Over the past several months, Kodak's condition worsened gradually. His mobility declined. His appetite became inconsistent. Paul's veterinarian, Dr. Sarah Malone, had been monitoring Kodak carefully through regular visits and was honest with Paul each time about what she was seeing.
Last Sunday evening, Paul sat with Kodak on the back porch for a long time. He called Dr. Malone afterward.
The appointment was Monday morning at nine.
Paul wore his uniform. He told his wife he wasn't sure why, exactly. It just felt right. Like Kodak had always known him in it. Dr. Malone and her technician gave Paul as much time as he needed. He sat on the clinic floor with Kodak in his arms for a long time before Dr. Malone prepared anything.
Paul's wife stood in the corner filming quietly. She knew Paul would want to remember it.
Paul was holding Kodak close, talking to him quietly, when Kodak did something that made everyone in the room go still.
Kodak lifted both front paws. Slowly. With great effort. And placed them on Paul's shoulders.
He held on.
Paul pulled Kodak closer and pressed his face into Kodak's neck. Neither of them moved.
Dr. Malone paused. Stood completely still. Her technician stepped back.
The room was completely quiet.
Paul stayed there holding Kodak for a long time after that.
Dr. Malone told us: "In twenty-two years of practice, I have never paused during a procedure. I paused Monday morning. That dog raised those paws with everything he had left. That was not a reflex. That was a goodbye. And I wasn't going to rush it."
Paul's department honored Kodak with a formal tribute on Tuesday. A post on the department's community page has been shared over forty thousand times.
Paul told the department chaplain: "Eight years on the street together. Through everything. And at the very end, when he could barely move, he lifted his paws and held on. He was telling me it was okay.
That we were okay. I'll carry that for the rest of my life."
