We have a brand-new addition in Tropical Discovery!

A lichenose leaf-tailed gecko has hatched here at the Zoo, marking the 17th hatchling of this species in just the past two years. 🥚

Lichenose leaf-tailed geckos are masters of disguise. Native to the forests of northeastern Madagascar, they mimic the mosses and lichens found on vines and branches so perfectly that they're nearly impossible to spot. They even have a fringe surrounding their entire body to help break up their outline. This species exists nowhere else on Earth, and their population is unfortunately in decline due to habitat loss.

DZCA manages the entire AZA population of lichenose leaf-tailed geckos and is home to one third of all individuals held in human care in the United States. This hatchling is a meaningful win for the species' future.

Come visit the adults on exhibit in Tropical Discovery while this little one continues to grow! 🦎

He was found in the most heartbreaking condition—alone, frightened, and struggling just to survive. His little body was covered in dirt, and he looked like he had almost given up.

But someone saw him.

Instead of walking away, they reached out and gave him the one thing he needed most: a chance. ❤️

He was carefully rescued, cleaned, and given the medical attention and gentle care he desperately needed. For perhaps the first time in a long time, he felt human hands touching him with kindness instead of fear.

Then came the warm bath, a soft bed, and a safe place where he could finally rest without worrying about what tomorrow would bring.

Look at him now. 🥹🐾

The frightened little soul who was once fighting to survive is beginning to understand what love feels like. His story is a reminder that sometimes, one person stopping to help can completely change the ending of a life.

He didn't need much—just someone to believe that his life mattered.

And now, instead of merely surviving, he finally has a chance to live. ❤️🐶

SUNDAY EMERGENCY 💔💔
Two lovely guys found this poor boy nearly knocked down earlier this evening. They stopped, put him in their car and brought him straight to us💔❤️
He had been dumped in a ditch, his bed dumped there beside him. Left like he meant nothing 💔💔💔💔💔
How can anyone do that to such a beautiful, gentle soul?
Thankfully, he is safe with us now. Tomorrow he’ll see the vet and finally get the care he deserves. ❤️
But this is our reality. 24/7, all over the country. Today it’s this boy. Tomorrow it’s mules, horses, dogs etc and countless others crying out for help.
And this is why we need you on board.

Since being adopted, Snoops has continued his dog socialisation and training, he's gone to private fields and has his own sofa to chill on throughout the day.
