New teachers often try covering a new standard each lesson and moving on. This isn’t how the mind acquires information best. Students need spaced repetition and progressive deepening. This requires a “track design” in which old topics are brought back and recombined with the new.
"Including explicit SEL instruction in your classroom doesn’t require a big, drastic change. ... Small investments in SEL instruction will lead to big changes in our students, the classroom community and ourselves."

New study on Math anxiety which shows how complex the factors are in terms of establishing the cause of it.
Interestingly, one thing that is not mentioned here at all is the idea that tests cause anxiety. https://t.co/qZ46gfsLCR
Kids who can’t juggle as many elements in working memory benefit from being able to retrieve elements from long term memory. Instead of denying struggling learners memorization strategies - labeling them “slow processors” - we should actually be leaning into them more.
How can we build knowledge through read-alouds?
Ex. of ❓ teachers can ask about 📚to ⬆️ knowledge:
-What new info have you learned from this page?
-How does that connect to what we learned yesterday?
-What does the author say about that? How do you know?

🚨The headlines tell you education is a dumpster fire, with burned out teachers and hapless admin and rancorous school boards.
👀 Step into a classroom and see magic happen. It's hard some days, but this is the greatest job ever. Our DNA is stamped with "make learning epic."
@laurenTarshis the Ss in 2J are LOVING our 1st I Survived read aloud! They are in awe of your ability to end every chapter with a cliffhanger that has them begging for one more chapter! Thank you!
@theVogelman@PsyDocCindy Beginning this work with the most critical/common gaps has made this more manageable in my classes. Over time, I’ve learned what needs to be added in the core instruction and pre-teaching is most helpful.
@alisonstoneBIO I haven’t stopped thinking about the idea that critical thinking depends on having something to think with. I see it in every thing we do. Knowledge-building is foundational.
@tetheredtoed1@KeldenFormosa I use the free version, but there is a paid version with more options. Agree the ability to track progress helps me target specific strategies/sets of facts to help students move toward mastery. The kids love Fact Freaks for additional practice.
@glasson_rebecca@MrZachG I teach 2nd grade. Would love to read more about research related to practices that promote executive functioning skills needed for learning.
@C_Hendrick@MJMA_Ed@AcademicaUoAS@researchED1 It was my first conference, and I’m looking forward to the next! Your keynote and the sessions with @natwexler have given me so much to think about as I plan for more effective instruction with my Ss. Thank you both…and thank you @alisonstoneBIO for inviting me! What a day!❤️
