As we were winding down a 6 hour visit to Tagus Estuary today, my guide Bernardo Barreto said, “I think I found something really special” and he pointed at a line of pink blobs about 2 football fields away from us in the distance. My first time seeing a Dunlin in breeding plumage. I've only seen them in non-breeding plumage when they migrate through in the Fall. They get their name from their non-breeding plumage, which is a grayish-brown color often called "dun."
