What Is Celtic Studies? Language at Its Core.
At the heart of Celtic identity lies its languages — Irish, Welsh, Breton, Cornish, Scottish Gaelic, and Manx. These six modern Celtic languages stem from two ancient branches: Goidelic and Brythonic. But “Celtic” is more than culture — it’s a linguistic family within Indo-European.
Ancient Celtic languages like Gaulish, Lepontic, and Celtiberian once stretched across continental Europe but survive today only in inscriptions. Some, like Tartessian, were once claimed to be Celtic — but modern linguists largely reject that idea due to a lack of linguistic evidence.
From ogham stones in Ireland to Gallo-Roman inscriptions in France and Spain, early Celtic writing traditions provide a glimpse into the lives of ancient peoples. Yet mystery remains — who truly spoke Celtic, and where?
As Harvard’s Department of Celtic Languages puts it: “Celtic” means language first — literature, folklore, and cultural identity all stem from that shared root.
