En la catedral vacía
danzamos despacio,
tus manos frías
dibujan mi destino,
prometimos amarnos
más allá del espacio,
donde la muerte misma
se vuelve cariño.

There is something in the woods tonight.
I hear it
where the black pines gather,
moving softly
beneath a moon too pale
to follow.
When I walk,
it walks.
When I stop,
the branches become still.
When I breathe,
somewhere beyond the trees,
another breath answers.
I tell myself
it is only a deer.
A fox.
The wind worrying
the bones of autumn.
But the wind does not whisper
your name.
And deer do not laugh
when you whisper back.
So I quicken my steps.
Behind me,
the forest quickens too.
I reach the porch.
The door.
The blessed warmth of home.
I lock the deadbolt
and stand there listening.
Nothing.
At last,
I begin to breathe again.
Then from the darkness
at the bottom of the stairs,
my own voice whispers—

Come nearer, beloved.
You have carried the day long enough. Let your hair fall through my fingers; let the tired weight of your forehead rest against mine. I have kept so many words for you, but now your hand is at my cheek, and I can remember only how to turn my lips to kiss your palm.
Outside, the wind moves through the bare branches. You draw me closer by the collar, and I kiss you slowly enough to feel the moment your lips soften beneath mine.
How strange, to have spent so many nights fearing what lives within me, and then to feel you settle against my chest as though you have found somewhere safe to sleep.
I scarcely move.
Your fingers loosen around mine. The candle fails. In the dark, I lower my lips to your hair and leave the words there—
where morning will find them,
still warm,
when you wake.
