@waltmossberg @Apple Users should have to use Apple Pay to purchase apps. Same as purchasing a product in a store.

IAP is like Walmart selling cookware and requiring all food cooked in it be purchased from Walmart (and Walmart being the only store that sells cookware).

Also only applies to Apple (for now). Google, XBox, Playstation, Steam all have the exact same rules.

@Paul_GreyKnight @cgledhill IAP stays the same. Companies can now steer (link to or tell users in app) to alternative payment options, such as on the website.

XBox/Playstation have the same rules as Apple and Google and Steam.

Games are 95% locked up. This is just a small crack in the dam

The EU is not far behind. US congress has a bill introduced that would open up the app stores. It even has bipartisan support as both parties are going after big tech. We will see if congress is still capable of legislating, even when they agree.

@fernandoparnes That is the point. It is the rock bottom absolute bare minimum concession from Apple. They want to make it sound like a big deal when in fact they moved a millimeter.

@benedictevans Well, as a payment processor, we are currently banned from phone apps due to IAP rules. We process sub-dollar payments. Both Apple and Google have a $1 minimum, so they can't even process what we do, but we are still banned.

It is a crack in the system. The tiniest crack possible to try to eliminate the possibility of a judge declaring that they are abusing their monopoly and opening the whole thing up.

Apple is doing the absolute bare minimum here to try to stave off bigger changes.

Businesses can "steer" users to non-Apple payment providers via email and non-app communications.

So you can send an email saying users can buy on the website instead of in the app.
