Dating back to the I century BC, #theRomanVilla in Le Grotte was considered of strategic importance for keeping the artillery battery during the war between France and the Reign of Naples. Today you can talk about it thanks to excavations between 1960 and 1972!

#FortFalcone is a part of the defence system of the town of Cosmopoli. It was built in 1548 and it sits on the highest hill in Portoferraio. From here you can see the town from above! 💚

#LinguellaTower or Martello Tower was built in 1548 by Giovanni Camerini for the Portoferraio’s fortification. Initially it was used for military reasons but in the 18th century it was converted into a prison.

#FortStella, as are also Fort Falcone and the Linguella Tower, is one of the major parts of the Medicean fortifications. The lighthouse is visible from the sea and is one of the most attractions of the town.

#TheVolterraioCastle is located between Portoferraio and Rio nell’Elba. It is the most ancient fortification on all the Island of Elba! It is one of the few fortresses never to have been raided by the Turkish pirates. 🏰
