Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) must remain committedMaldives Ports Limitedits core mandate: the effective management and continuous improvement of port infrastructure and existing services. Any expansion of MPL’s subsidiary into broader logistics activities presents significant risks to private sector operators and undermines the principles of fair competition.
The most pressing challenges confronting the port are vessel turnaround delays, congestion, operational inefficiencies, and the urgent need for infrastructure development and capacity building. These issues must be prioritized to strengthen the nation’s maritime trade.
Allowing MPL to operate simultaneously as regulator and competitor would create a conflict of interest, risk monopolizing the supply chain, distort the market, and weaken the private logistics sector. Safeguarding a balanced and competitive environment is essential to ensure sustainable growth and resilience in Maldives’ logistics and trade ecosystem.
