Are we "importing" inflation!!??

1. With the depreciation of the rupee against the US dollar -reaching nearly 5 per cent during 2025, imported inflation will play a bigger role in the headline numbers, say economists. 

2. When general price levels rise because of a hike in the prices of imported commodities, it is termed "imported inflation".

3. The rise is on account of higher demand for imported items and depreciation of the domestic currency against the dollar. 

4. Depreciation of 1 per cent could increase the price level between 0.2 per cent and 0.4 per cent.

5. The "imported inflation" component of the CPI basket has reached 1.6 per cent, driven by gold and oils and fats. The inflation is expected to rise further given the depreciation in the rupee.

6. Rupee depreciation will indeed reflect in higher wholesale and retail prices, in the next couple of months. 

7. Apart from depreciation, inflation rise in the US, along with restructuring of the CPI in India, will also impact inflation numbers in India (MOSPI is considering to revise the base year for CPI and also change the weights of various items in the CPI basket.)

8. Higher US inflation will result in higher global prices, given the extent of the economy's integration with global trade. 

9. The upcoming CPI rebase will likely see altering of weightages of the CPI basket significantly. Lower weights for food and fuel, which are currently benign, will reduce their dampening effect, while higher weights for imported raw materials and electronics could make imported inflation more pronounced. (pl note: At present, food and beverages accounts for over 50% weight in CPI and food inflation has been negative for quite a while, keeping the overall headline inflation below 1%. Once the weightage for food is reduced in CPI basket, it will increase the overall headline inflation rate, measured by CPI).

10. However, the GST rate cuts could help in lowering. the impact of a weak rupee.
