Democracy is worth defending. At Halifax I sat on a panel with General Jennie Carignan, Garry Kasparov and Hanna Hopko and argued democracies must turn intent into action: raise defence spending, widen joint exercises and intelligence-sharing, and boost cyber resilience. (1/2)
The second panel with @JohnEdHerbst, @ChRodhe, @Bobrovska_MP, Flemming Splidsboel Hansen, @SaraNanni, and LibMods Ukraine Program Director @Simon_Schlegel_ discussed what security guarantees #Ukraine needs. What are the conditions for ending the war? How can Ukraine be stabilised and another Russian attack prevented?
Thank you all for your participation, for sharing your insights and valuable inputs! A detailed conference with photos & videos will follow shortly. 👍

🇺🇦 What security guarantees does Ukraine need? Second panel at our international Ukraine conference with @JohnEdHerbst, @ChRodhe, @Bobrovska_MP, Flemming Splidsboel Hansen and @SaraNanni, moderated by LibMods Ukraine Program Director @Simon_Schlegel_.
Sara Nanni: "Right now we have a negotiation table with three parties, two of them want a capitulation of Ukraine. So, maybe we need a new table!" Solomiia Bobrovska,: "On the negotiations – There is an endless list of demands from Trump’s administration of what Ukraine must do. But what are the demands to the Russian side? Will they just stop fighting along the frontline? Russian threat will be endless, and we must be prepared. Freedom is not free."

Fantastisk rivstart för Forum Östeuropa organiserat av @SCEEUS_UI @UISweden och @SweInstitute med otaliga svenska aktörer på området. Sverige har en mycket god resursbas och nu stärker vi synergier och samarbetet på bredden!
This evening the Barbados flagged MJ PINAR was struck in the port of Odesa by a Russian missile while loading grain, I believe five crew members are dead. The MJ PINAR has made numerous trips to the Odesa Area ports since April of 2024.
Ship traffic continues to Odesa.
Ok folks, deep breaths.
There is very real reason to worry about the dynamic emerging between Washington and Moscow when it comes to Ukraine. But there is also very real reason to believe that Ukraine and Europe can create a better outcome.
(A rather long 🧵, obviously)

As we await the signing of the #Russia-#Iran strategic partnership agreement tomorrow, a few thoughts on its broader strategic context - esp. as viewed from Moscow

The West should support Armenia’s security by supporting military reform, providing access to technology, promoting economic diversification and assisting diplomatic efforts to resolve regional conflicts.
New report by @SCEEUS_UI colleagues @HugovonEssen and @hedenskog_jakob ⬇️

"Empirically, we can see that the Kremlin follows a clear playbook. The general steps include:
1. Create a problem.
2. Put the international community in a position where it feels compelled to devise a “solution” to the problem" -@ChRodhe https://t.co/OqaIRRPvWH
