Thank you, Governor Frances Adamson AC.
Today marks the conclusion of Her Excellency’s distinguished five-year term - and an opportunity to recognise everything she and her husband Rod Bunten have given to South Australia.
Since taking office in October 2021, Her Excellency has honoured the role through her distinguished service, thoughtful leadership and tireless commitment to South Australians.
Alongside Rod, she has made people from every walk of life feel welcomed, valued and represented.
Together, they have brought warmth and generosity to Government House, recognising the contributions of people across our state and helping them feel that their experiences and aspirations matter.
I would like to pay tribute to them both for their outstanding service to South Australia over the past five years.
On behalf of all South Australians, I thank Her Excellency and Rod for everything they have given to our state.
They leave Government House with our profound gratitude, affection and respect.
SA Police Commissioner Grant Stevens APM has devoted his working life to serving and protecting South Australians.
Grant has led with integrity, sound judgment and an unwavering sense of duty, earning the trust of our community through some of the most challenging periods in our state’s history.
He understands South Australia and its people.
From frontline policing to leading our response to major emergencies, and through his work helping young people find a better path, his service has always been grounded in a commitment to others.
That commitment extends well beyond policing - through Operation Flinders, his support for cancer research, prevention and treatment, and his advocacy for organ donation.
Today, I announced that His Majesty King Charles III has approved my recommendation to appoint Commissioner Stevens as our state’s 37th Governor.
I have every confidence Grant will be an outstanding Governor. His ability to connect with people, his steady leadership and his understanding of our community will serve South Australia exceptionally well.
With Emma by his side, I know they will embrace this opportunity to serve and make an exceptional contribution to our state.
Congratulations Grant – we look forward to the swearing-in on 9 December.
It is extremely heartening to see the South Australian economy continue to punch above its weight in the latest ANZ Stateometer - with SA retaining its position as the strongest-performing economy in the nation for the sixth consecutive quarter.
We are walking tall on the national stage.
This Government has prioritised policies to stimulate housing construction and maximising our copper opportunity, so it’s particularly positive to see housing growth and copper exports helping bolster the state economy’s underlying strength.
I’m in Whyalla tonight talking to workers following an important announcement about the future of the Whyalla Steelworks.
The administrator, KordaMentha, has announced that efforts to restart the Whyalla Steelworks blast furnace over recent months have been unsuccessful.
It has always been a question of when, not if this particular blast furnace would close.
The equipment is more than 60 years old and has not had the investment it deserves through recent decades.
In fact, it is only due to the Herculean efforts of the workers in Whyalla that it has survived this long.
Today’s announcement does not mean the end of the line for Whyalla.
Mining, port and other operations will continue, and the sale process for the steelworks is continuing.
Whyalla’s future has never rested on this blast furnace. The Steelworks needs the right new owner, willing and able to deliver new capital investment to set up Australian steelmaking for the long term.
And that’s exactly what we and the Federal Government are committed to delivering through our $1.9 billion sovereign steelmaking package.
There are currently about 1700 people employed at the Steelworks and after the blast furnace closure, there will be about 1200.
For workers affected by the closure, we stand ready to help.
The State and Federal Governments are also delivering a $10 million package to provide practical assistance with new employment opportunities, training and reskilling, career advice, financial information and wellbeing support.
A Transition Centre is now open at the Whyalla TAFE campus to deliver these supports.
Our economy is growing quickly with high demand for skilled labour. Already companies like BHP, Hallett and Peak Iron have expressed their interest in recruiting.
Our intervention will also ensure affected workers receive their entitlements in full.
We always knew the transition from an ageing blast furnace to the next generation of steelmaking would involve difficult decisions.
But our objective has not changed - for Australia to make steel in Whyalla.
I look forward to announcing the new owner and their plans later this year.
This morning I gave an update on everything we’re doing to find the Australians still unaccounted for in Nepal and Tibet, China.
I announced we're deploying a team of specialist drone operators, who will provide mapping & thermal imaging to support search & rescue efforts.
Today marks the 75th anniversary of the ANZUS Treaty, a cornerstone of Australia’s defence and security, and a foundation of our enduring cooperation with the United States and New Zealand.
The signing of the ANZUS Treaty in 1951 formalised the Australia-US Alliance, which was forged on the battlefields of two world wars.
For more than seven decades, the Alliance has underpinned peace, stability and prosperity in our region and continues to contribute to the region’s strategic balance.
Today the United States remains our closest ally and principal strategic partner.
As we look to the future, we work closely with the United States to deliver for the Australian and American people, deepening the bonds of friendship and goodwill that have connected our nations for generations.
The Alliance between Australia and New Zealand remains closer than ever, tightly bound by our shared history. Our security partnership was founded in the days of the first ANZACs, with this spirit continuing to enliven our modern Alliance.
Today, our Alliance continues to evolve, including efforts to operate as an increasingly integrated, combat capable ANZAC force. Our Alliance has a critical role in safeguarding national security and supporting stability in the Indo-Pacific as we work to shape a region where sovereignty is respected.
As we mark this milestone amidst an increasingly complex strategic environment, we reaffirm the enduring value of ANZUS.
Housing is a supply challenge - so we need to build more homes, faster.
That means unlocking more land, investing in infrastructure and embracing new ways of building.
And South Australian companies like 5North are helping us do exactly that, using advanced manufacturing to cut construction times.
Kicking off my visit to Washington DC with our Ambassador, Greg Moriarty AO, an outstanding representative for Australia in the United States.
Thanks to the Ambassador and his team for all their support as we work to advance the opportunities AUKUS presents for South Australia during our time in DC.
By widening Richmond Road and installing more through and turning lanes, road users will spend less time stuck in peak hour traffic. We’ve already improved James Congdon Drive and removed the dogleg along Grange Road.
And now we’re upgrading this intersection.
Two proud Pacific nations. Two historic treaties to make our region more secure.
Today, Australia and Fiji signed the Ocean of Peace Alliance, with an obligation to come to each other’s defence in times of need.
And with our Vuvale Union, we’ve committed to working more closely to boost our economies and invest in our people.
From tackling climate change to building the infrastructure that connects our region, we’ll get it done together.
Congratulations to the American people celebrating their 250th Independence Day.
For more than a century, Australia and the United States have stood together as close allies and partners, working to support security and prosperity.
As the United States marks this historic milestone, our friendship is stronger than ever.
History made 🩷🖤
Three premierships in four years - and the first team to win three Super Netball premierships.
Congratulations to the Adelaide Thunderbirds on another championship victory.
South Australia is incredibly proud of you all!
A heartbreaking way to bow out of the World Cup, but what a journey. Our @Socceroos gave everything, inspired a nation and made Australia proud. Hold your heads high!
It was fantastic to officially open the new Hotel Panorama tonight.
Congratulations to the Hurley family on bringing this outstanding venue to life, creating 175 jobs and giving Adelaide another great place to gather, dine and celebrate.
Homelessness is a challenge that requires action from governments, communities and charities alike.
That’s why this Thursday night, I’ll be taking part in the Vinnies CEO Sleepout.
The funds raised help support services like Fred’s Van, which provides practical assistance to South Australians experiencing hardship.
While there is always more work to do to address homelessness, organisations like Vinnies provide support, connection and compassion in ways that bureaucracy and government departments often can’t.
The crowd at the Drive says it all!!!
More than 5,000 fans witnessed our very own Nestory Irankunda make his FIFA World Cup debut and become the youngest Socceroo ever to score at a World Cup.
A proud moment for South Australia. A special moment for Australian football.
