I have all of Lloyd-Jones’s published books in my personal library and have read many of them to great profit of soul, including these— “Joy Unspeakable” and “The Sovereign Spirit.” They lay out his convictions which caused his grandson to write that “he was both Reformed and Charismatic” while addressing concerns and grievances he had with both movements in his day. (19th century)

Like any man, I can’t affirm everything he preached/wrote. All things must be tested with Scripture, of course, and I think he misses it on certain points. But he wanted these published, and his family saw to it after he died in 1981. That said, they are severely neglected by many in our day who claim to love MLJ.

I think the Doctor was much more right than wrong in these books, and I don’t believe you can really know and appreciate him as he was if you leave them out. They bear very important teaching and exhortation for the Church in our day, delivered by one of Christ’s choicest servants. If you’re scared to read these because of your theological tradition, you’re part of the reason he was so compelled to preach and publish them. You ought to resist your indifference or fear and give them a focused read. It may change your life.

@B_A_Purtle Funny, I just purchased Joy Unspeakable a couple months ago. Now I need to go take a look. And to agree with you, a believer should never be afraid to hear an honest teaching from Scripture that challenges what they have always believed. The Scriptures ALONE are our foundation!

Now that the victory is won against the devil and sin, verse 4 reminds us of the gifts of the Spirit which are ours because of this man, Jesus. Our possessions, our family, and our body can all be taken away. But HIS kingdom is forever. Go listen to this rich hymn again. (6 of 6)

A few observations/encouragements: Verse 1 takes a hard turn halfway through and the church begins singing about the devil. He is described as “great” in his hate and “on earth is not his equal.” Don’t tune your brain out and think that final phrase is worshipful to God. (3 of 6)

Verse 3 is often skipped in arrangements I’ve heard. If you lead worship, please don’t skip this. This is the battle verse! The whole song has built to this. “The prince of darkness grim, we tremble not for him….his doom is sure. One little word shall fell him.” GLORY! (5 of 6)
