Summer time is here! Great for us teachers! 😂.
When it comes to the football aspect, I use this time to meet individually with my Offensive players before we hit the summer.
I noticed a lot of coaches meet with their players at THE END OF THE YEAR. I do the same thing, but why not take stock of the spring and figure out what worked/ what didn’t with your players. Relationships are vital. So I do an end of the spring evaluation and meeting. Here is what I go over:
-player summation from their POV
-player summation from my POV
-goals for the summer. Now this one’s big. I love when kids say to coaches “my plan is to work harder. Give 💯. Be coachable.” What does that mean? That’s just sounds good. But what’s the plan? That’s where we as coaches come in. I give a detailed plan based on their 3-5 goals individually they can do outside of team workouts. An example would be:
WR wants to get stronger hands:
-catch 100 balls a day from QB, coaches juggs machine, trainer, parent etc.
-every catch needs to be away from the body and tuck as soon as ball is caught
-work grip strength in weight room with hand grips 2-3 sets, 10 reps.
-catch will head turned away and last second turn and catch 20 reps.
Now the accountability piece is there so if things don’t work out in the fall, we can pinpoint where the lack of accountability took place. If things do work out, now they can pinpoint where their career took off.
15 plans have been finished, now ready to finish the other 15 for my offensive players. Time consuming sure, but worth it if games are won and players achieve their goals.
P.S. I will be doing this with my QB trainees as well this upcoming week.

Spring game results. Score is irrelevant because it’s the preseason and no banners are given to be hung in the gym for spring game results. It’s about development. Lost spring games in years we won district titles and won spring games we went barely above .500. We experienced some good, some bad. Not one to sugarcoat results to make the night seem better than what it was. Might hurt the Q Rating, but I don’t care. It’s about telling objective truths. That’s how true growth is achieved:
-we played good competition who were both physical & well coached teams. Again anyone who knows those schools knows this. So it’s great to stack up against it and see where we stand in mid May.
-we have been together for 4 weeks of practice. So you get 4 weeks of practice results. We completed passes. We dropped passes. We had big gains on the ground. We lost yards on the ground. This is what a short time together gets you.
-Big plays made by some of our guys. But those same guys also made mistakes. So it’s something we have to eliminate.
-I can do a better job as well. It always begins and ends with me in terms of development, accountability, and scheme. However, first I must create deeper relationships with these players. That will happen with the summer.
-4 TDs in a game of football. Not great but not bad. Balanced offensive results. Those numbers will be posted soon. And they might not be great, but oh well. Don’t run from criticism. Run toward it! Looking forward to the summer! Now the true development begins!

Yes!!!!! Game week! What I love the most about it is the ability to see how much our kids embrace the attention to detail. Key factors to focus on:
-Tempo! Must be fast with everything.
-Get vertical! Only way to beat better pursuing defenses.
-Embrace the coaching to the smallest detail. Run toward criticism, don’t run away from it.
-Embrace challenges. We have one of the tougher spring jamborees/games in the state. Run toward it!
-Ignore the outside noise. Embrace those on the inside. They are the ones who will get you through it!
-Finally, no matter the outcome, remember, it’s just spring! The summer is another chance to get back to the drawing board.
