The most lovely, “Desert Wings”, another fine Keith Parkinson piece.
Said Keith, “I suppose that while she makes a fashion statement, it’s not the most practical of desert attire. But, hey, whatever happened to artistic license anyway? Besides, the girl is incidental, just part of the scenery, the picture is really a portrait of the falcon …. yeah, uh huh….”
At first glance, this just looks like a neat illustration in AD&D’s the Vllage of Hommlet.
However, most folks don’t realize how painstakingly accurate this is.
Look at the map. Trampier put us in the south crossroad looking north. Ahead on the left is farmhouse 1, with the goodwife outside on her path. Beyond 2 trees is a large barn, then another farmhouse, then the largest building in town, the Inn of the Welcome Wench, behind a walled courtyard. On the right behind 3 trees is a small L-shaped farmhouse, a barn, a fenced yard, and the leatherworker's house by another tree.
The only detail that doesn't match is one extra tree Trampier placed just inside the inn's yard. I would bet it was on the original map before the name of the inn was added on top of it.
Four years ago today, the mists parted and Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft opened the door to horror in Dungeons & Dragons like never before...
