Hitler Sues Newspaper Publisher?

September 4, 1923

103 years ago, Adolf Hitler sues the Berlin socialist newspaper Vorwärts for libel. The paper had claimed that he and his Bavarian fascist movement were being financed by “American Semitic and Bolshevist funds,” including money tied to Henry Ford and American bankers, a charge meant to split him from his nationalist following. The newspaper could not produce evidence, so the court awarded him 6 million marks. Hyperinflation was already gutting that sum at about 11% a day. The case came just two months before the Beer Hall Putsch.
